Everything You Need to Know About Boating on Lake of the Ozarks
Located in the heart of Missouri’s Ozark Plateau, Lake of the Ozarks is a sprawling 54,000-acre reservoir stretching across four counties with more than 1,150 miles of scenic shoreline. Its winding channels, secluded coves, buzzing party hotspots, and water-sports-friendly waters make it a top-tier destination. From thrill-seekers and anglers to families seeking a laid-back day on the water, there is something for everyone at Lake of the Ozarks.
To make sure you have a great day on the lake, consider the following tips:

1. Choose the Right Boat
The type of boat you choose for your outing will depend on its intended use. Below are a few different kinds of boats you can consider:
- Pontoons / Tritoons: These are always a crowd favorite. With roomy decks and stable rides, they’re perfect for family outings, swimming, or a day of leisure cruising.
- Speedboats & Ski Boats: These types of watercraft cater to adrenaline lovers. You can haul tubes, tow skiers, or just skew across the open water for a day full of fun.
- Fishing Boats: Especially bass or jon boats, are essential for anglers flocking to bass tournaments or quiet backwaters. For fishing, you’ll need a boat that can keep you comfortable all day.
- Cruisers/Yachts: Cruises and yachts offer upscale comfort, cabin space, kitchens, and overnight amenities. These are a great choice for multi-day adventures.
There are several boat rental companies on the lake that can help you find the right watercraft for your day of fun in the sun.
Lake of the Ozarks offers a variety of on-water experience areas. Some of these must-see boating destinations include:
- Party Cove (Anderson Hollow Cove): Known as America's original floating party spot, it draws thousands of boats and revelers on summer weekends. Expect rollicking fun, but also heavy traffic and water patrol.
- Grand Glaize Arm & Ha-Ha Tonka Cove: These areas offer laid-back coves tucked into tree-lined arms. They’re ideal for swimming, kayaking, and relaxing on the lake.
- Bagnell Dam Area: Conveniently located with shops and restaurants, this location is a great place for the entire family. With stores like gift shops, candy emporiums, and even an arcade, this is the place to be.
- Boat‑Events Hotspots: Look out for major gatherings like Shootout (powerboat races), Aquapalooza (a national floating festival), and weekend crowds at lakeside venues.
2. Pick Your Boating Destination

3. Get On the Water
In addition to the boat rental companies with their boats already in the water, there are several boat ramps for launching. These include:
- Paved, four-lane ramps at Grand Glaize Beach and Pa He Tsi
- Two-lane ramp at Public Beach #1
Fees range from $5 for watercraft under 30 feet to $10 for boats 30 feet and above. Annual permits are also available.
Note that the Pa He Tsi ramp is only open from March through October and can be closed during periods of low water levels.
With a mix of lively party zones and quieter coves, it’s important that boaters adhere to Missouri boating laws and the following guidelines:
- Be an early bird: For busy spots and events like Aquapalooza or Shootout, launch and arrive well before 10 am. This not only ensures you get a good spot, but it also keeps you from interrupting the activities.
- Watch your speed: “No wake” zones—like around docks, swim areas, and other boats—require idle speed. Be sure to obey these speed limits as violating them could lead to repercussions.
- Avoid reckless riding: Jet ski weaving, jumping wakes near others, and crossing wakes dangerously are all prohibited. If you’re in a boat, be aware of smaller craft on the water to avoid accidents.
- Say no to alcohol while driving: Missouri enforces boating under the influence (BUI) similar to a DUI. If you have alcohol on board, hire a designated captain or charter service.
- Life jackets fit and fastened: This law is mandatory and essential, especially for swimmers and kids.
- Know your buoys: Red = starboard, green = port. These mark safe channels.
4. Know Your Boating Etiquette and Safety

5. Be Aware of These Extra Tips for Smooth Cruising
A few extra tips to make your day on the lake both fun and safe:
- Launch early: Secure a ramp time and parking spot, both especially important during holidays and summer weekends.
- Navigate waves smartly: Busy waters create wakes, and that can interfere with docking. Give yourself ample time and space to dock.
- Bring safety gear: Life preservers, flares, fire extinguishers, and first aid kits are just a few items you should have on board.
- Check weather & water levels: Thunderstorms are common in summer, so be sure to check the weather often. In addition, lake levels occasionally dip, impacting ramp usability. Check water levels before you go.
