have to stay at
Bear Bottom Resort during your next vacation.

From the River to the Sea
The story begins in the late 1920s, specifically when the Union Electric Company of St. Louis was devising a way to generate more hydroelectric power from central Missouri. Their plan? Build the Bagnell Dam, harnessing the flow of the nearby Osage River. The first obstacle was building this during a period unlike any other—The Great Depression. With an economic downturn, it didn’t seem possible for a new dam to be built, yet it was.
When completed in 1931, the results spoke for themselves. At the time, it created the largest man-made lake—an inland sea, if you will—in the United States. At over 90 miles in length and 54,000 acres, the lake changed the geography and the region overnight. It wasn’t just a project, it was an engineering feat. A new way of life emerged from the newly formed shoreline, a life that stands to this very day.
An Unexpected Journey
As previously mentioned, the initial purpose was purely hydroelectric generation. Tourism really wasn’t a goal the developers had in mind, but it didn’t take long for people to notice. The sheer size of the lake appealed to most travelers, especially once roads improved in the 1940s and ‘50s, making it readily accessible. Now, people could escape the city and swim, fish, or boat until their heart’s content.
Privately managed, unlike most government reservoirs, the area soon became developed. Resorts, marinas, and vacation homes boomed along the shorelines, becoming a lifestyle built on tourism, real estate, and recreation.
Full of Legends
A lake this big was bound to collect a few ghost stories and legends along the way. Let’s examine a couple:
1. Linn Creek
The old town of Linn Creek was submerged by water when the lake was built. While most of the structures were either demolished or relocated, there are legends that some of the city’s remains are still there. Divers have occasionally reported seeing foundations, wells, and roadbeds. Although it was stated that the town was abandoned, with all visible structures removed before the flooding, was it? The mystery still remains.
2. Ha Ha Tonka Castle
The
Ha Ha Tonka Castle was built in the early 1900s by a Kansas City businessman, but was soon destroyed by fire in 1942. Locals will tell you that the area is still haunted by spirits of former residents today. If you believe in paranormal activity, this is the place for you. The park is a famous landmark and a great spot for all photographers and ghost hunters alike. See for yourself if the former mansion is haunted, but be warned—you might just hear unexpected footsteps.

Reputation and Spotlight
Lake of the Ozarks has become a well-known hotspot for weekend fun, especially around the area known as “Party Cove”. Thousands gather in boats or along the shore each summer for impromptu parties. It has helped to solidify the lake’s reputation as a destination for fun-seekers.
If you love to binge-watch good shows on Netflix, chances are you’ve heard of the show
Ozarks. Although filmed in Georgia, this series takes place in the Lakes of the Ozarks, thrusting the area into the spotlight. Showcasing the region’s mysterious and shadowy potential, the exposure has brought another wave of curiosity to the area.
So, What’s Next?
As the lake grows in popularity, concerns for its long-term sustainability have grown as well. However, local groups are stepping up. The Lake of the Ozarks Watershed Alliance (LOWA) and Missouri Clean Water Commission have pushed for better education, cleaner practices, and smarter development, ensuring the lake can be used for future generations to come.
